Payne in Pacifica
Payne is the bottom rung of the Carrier lineup, and its cabinets and coils don't carry the extra coastal coating some higher-tier units offer. That matters more here than almost anywhere else I work. Pacifica's marine air carries salt inland from Rockaway Beach, Sharp Park, and Linda Mar, and I see it accelerate corrosion on condenser fins, cabinet fasteners, and electrical contacts faster than it would a few miles inland in San Bruno or Daly City.
The climate itself is easy on the equipment. Cooling load in Pacifica is about as light as it gets on the Peninsula, fog and onshore wind keep summer afternoons cool, so a Payne AC rarely runs hard. The tradeoff is that the same ocean air working against the metal means I'm replacing corroded contactors, capacitors, and coils here well before I would on a comparable system a few miles inland.
If you're weighing Payne against a step-up unit specifically because of the coastal air, I'll say so plainly at the estimate instead of letting corrosion surprise you two years in.

Light-load AC sizing for a fog-heavy coastline. Pacifica's cooling load is minimal most of the year, and I still find oversized condensers installed off habit rather than a load calculation. A correctly sized single-stage Payne AC actually holds up better here, since fewer hard-cycling starts means less wear on parts that are already fighting the salt air.
