Samsung in Pacifica
Pacifica is the one city in our Peninsula coverage where I bring up corrosion before I bring up anything else. The salt air off the ocean settles on everything from Rockaway Beach down through Linda Mar and Sharp Park, and an outdoor condenser mounted low and exposed to that air will show pitting on the fins within a couple years if nobody planned for it. That's not a Samsung-specific problem, any outdoor unit faces it here, but it changes how we place and maintain the equipment.
The older beach cottages and bungalows along Highway 1 mostly never had central air. Fog and onshore wind keep summer temperatures mild most days, so cooling was never the priority, but a lot of these homes are drafty and cold through the winter with nothing but an old wall heater. A Samsung ductless head handles both sides of that, heat through the damp months and cooling on the handful of genuinely warm days a year Pacifica gets.
We're upfront about the tradeoff here. Any brand's outdoor unit needs more attention in this air. What we do differently with Samsung installs in Pacifica is choose a mounting location off the direct ocean-facing wall where we can, use stainless hardware, and set a maintenance rhythm that checks the coil more often than we would inland.
Samsung work we do in Pacifica
Corrosion-resistant mounting and hardware on the outdoor unit. We avoid mounting the outdoor unit on a wall that takes direct ocean spray when there's any other option, and we use stainless brackets and screws instead of standard hardware that rusts through in a season or two out here. It's a placement decision as much as an equipment one.
Coil fin pitting leading to slow refrigerant leaks. Salt air pits the aluminum fins on the outdoor coil over time, and a pitted fin eventually turns into a pinhole leak. On Pacifica service calls I check coil condition and system pressure even when the complaint is something unrelated, because a slow leak here shows up as reduced cooling months before anyone notices refrigerant loss.
Terminal corrosion at the outdoor unit connection. The low-voltage terminals where the comm wire meets the outdoor unit sit right in the salt fog, and corrosion there causes the same kind of fault code you'd see from a bad board. I clean and check that connection on every Pacifica visit before assuming the board itself has failed.
