Mitsubishi ductless, answered.

The questions Bay Area homeowners ask us most before a new mini-split, with the numbers.

01 / Cost and savings

Cost and savings

How much does a Mitsubishi Electric ductless system cost?

A Mitsubishi Electric ductless system usually runs about $5,500 to $9,000 for each room or zone, depending on the home. What moves the number: how many indoor units you need, the total system size, whether the electrical panel has room, how far the refrigerant lines have to run, the series you choose (Hyper-Heat models cost more) and the controls you want. The installation assessment is free, and it ends with an exact written estimate.

Will it lower my energy bills?

Usually, because you heat and cool only the rooms you are using. Mitsubishi Electric says its zoned systems are up to 40% more efficient than conventional heating and air conditioning systems. Your result depends on the house, your rates and how you run it, so we do not promise a number.

Is financing available?

Financing available on approved credit. We go over the options at the assessment.

02 / How it works

How it works in your home

Does it heat as well as cool?

Yes. A Mitsubishi Electric heat pump does both from the same indoor unit. Cooling-only systems exist, but most of our customers want both.

Will it keep up in cold weather?

Easily in the Bay Area. Mitsubishi Electric rates its Hyper-Heat (H2i) models for 100% heating capacity at 5°F and continued heating down to -13°F.

Can it replace my furnace and AC, or only cool one room?

Either. Many homes run on a ductless system alone. Others add one indoor unit for the room the central system never reaches, like a bonus room or an upstairs bedroom.

How many rooms can one outdoor unit serve?

A single-zone system is one outdoor unit and one indoor unit. A multi-zone outdoor unit can serve several rooms, up to eight indoor units on the largest models. We size it from a load calculation, not by counting rooms.

Does it plug into a wall outlet?

No. The indoor unit connects to the outdoor unit through two small refrigerant lines and a control cable, and the system is hard-wired to its own circuit. We check panel capacity at the assessment.

03 / Looks and noise

What it looks like and how loud it is

Do the units have to hang on the wall?

No. Wall-mounted units are the most common, but there are floor consoles that sit low like a radiator, ceiling cassettes that sit flush with the ceiling, and ducted units hidden in a closet, attic or soffit so you only see a grille. We pick the style room by room.

How big is an indoor wall unit?

Most Mitsubishi wall units are about 31 to 39 inches wide, depending on the series and capacity. The outdoor unit for a small system is about the size of a large suitcase.

How loud is it?

Indoors, very quiet. Mitsubishi Electric lists its quietest indoor units at 19 dB(A) on the lowest fan speed, about a whisper. Outdoor units are louder, starting around 46 dB(A), so we place them away from bedroom windows and property lines.

04 / Installation and warranty

Installation and warranty

How long does installation take?

A single room is usually done in one day. A multi-zone system typically takes a second day. We tell you the plan at the assessment.

What warranty comes with it?

As a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor, we register your M-Series or P-Series system for the Mitsubishi Electric 12-year parts and 12-year compressor limited warranty (the HM, WR, HX and WX wall-mounted series top out at 10 years). We register all indoor and outdoor units within 90 days of installation. This coverage applies to a single-family home while the original owner continues to live there and is not transferable. Our standard workmanship warranty is 2 years. Optional extended labor coverage through JB Warranties is available for up to 12 years under a separate purchased plan. It is not included automatically with the manufacturer warranty. The full breakdown, including the California rule, is in our Mitsubishi warranty guide.

05 / The assessment

What happens at the free assessment

What happens at the installation assessment, and how long does it take?

Plan on 60 to 90 minutes. We walk the rooms you want to heat and cool, ask how you use them, look at where indoor and outdoor units can go, check the electrical panel and the line route, and run a load calculation. You get a written estimate with the equipment, the series and the warranty level spelled out. The assessment is free.

How do I get ready for it?

Have everyone who will make the decision at home for the visit, so nobody has to hear it secondhand. A recent electric bill helps, and so does a list of the rooms that bother you most. Clear a path to the electrical panel and, if you have one, the attic access.
