A quote that says only “Mitsubishi mini-split” leaves a lot undecided. The wall unit, outdoor unit and controls all matter. Start with the rooms you want to condition and the indoor style you can live with; then compare the complete equipment combinations.
This guide uses Mitsubishi’s July 2026 M & P Product Match-up Sheet and its Multi-Zone Ported and Branch Box guide. The rating ranges below cover the combinations listed in that sheet. They are not a prediction of your utility bill. We confirm the selected pair and its current submittal before putting it in your estimate.
Wall units: FX, GX, JX, HX and WX
For a single room with space high on a wall, these are the families to compare. FX is worth considering when cold-weather output and the highest listed efficiency ratings matter. GX offers a choice of standard or Hyper-Heating outdoor units. JX is the sheet’s 115 V option; we check the available electrical supply before recommending it. HX and WX are other standard heat-pump choices, with an added Wi-Fi interface rather than built-in Wi-Fi and a different warranty limit.
| Matched family | SEER2 | HSPF2 | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|---|
| FX Hyper-Heating | 23.5–35 | 10.5–13.3 | Built in |
| GX Hyper-Heating | 21.5–28.4 | 10–10.2 | Built in |
| GX standard heat pump | 18.5–28.4 | 8.5–11 | Built in |
| JX standard, 115 V | 20 | 10 | Built in |
| HX standard | 20 | 9.5–10 | Added interface |
| WX standard | 18 | 8.5 | Added interface |
Cold-weather wording matters. “Heating down to” and “100% Heating at” describe different things. The July sheet uses these exact statements in its family headings (temperatures in °F):
- FX: “100% Heating at -10 Degrees”.
- GX Hyper-Heating: “100% Heating at -5 Degrees”.
- GX standard: “100% Htg at 17 Degrees, Heating down to -5”.
- JX: “100% Heating at 17 Degrees, Heating down to -5”.
- HX: “100% Heating at 47 Degrees, 70% Htg at 5 Degrees, Heating down to -5”.
- WX: “100% Heating at 47 Degrees, 70% Heating at 17 Degrees, Heating down to 5”.
Those are the sheet’s family summaries, not a promise that every system will meet your home’s heating load at that temperature. Its instruction is to verify output at specific temperatures against the selected equipment’s submittal or Mitsubishi’s Diamond System Builder. We use that check when choosing equipment for your home.
Universal SUZ: choose the indoor shape
SUZ is an outdoor-unit family paired with several indoor styles. That gives you options when a high wall unit would be awkward. The sheet lists EX wall units, MLZ-KX one-way ceiling cassettes, MFZ-KX floor units and SLZ-AF four-way ceiling cassettes. For concealed equipment, it lists SEZ-AD lower-static ducted units, PEAD-AA medium-static ducted units and SVZ-AP multi-position air handlers.
The indoor-unit style guide helps you compare where these cabinets go. If you already have ducts, see replacing a furnace and AC with a Mitsubishi air handler. A listed match still needs room for installation and future service.
| Outdoor system type | SEER2 range | HSPF2 range |
|---|---|---|
| Standard heat pump | 15.8–21.7 | 8–12.9 |
| Hyper-Heating | 14.8–20.2 | 7.9–10.2 |
These broad ranges include different indoor units and sizes. A floor unit and a ducted air handler should not be compared using just the highest number in the row. The July sheet marks MFZ-KX floor units and MLZ-KX one-way cassettes as having built-in Wi-Fi. The other SUZ indoor styles shown use an added interface for app control.
For standard SUZ systems, the first heading says “100% Heating at 47, 85% Heating at 17 degrees, 70% Htg down at 5 degrees” and “Heating down to -4 Degrees”. For Hyper-Heating SUZ systems, Mitsubishi Electric rates its Hyper-Heat (H2i) models for 100% heating capacity at 5°F and continued heating down to -13°F. The exact matched system’s submittal governs the selection.
P-Series: more indoor arrangements
P-Series is another single-zone route when the project calls for a ducted air handler, a ceiling-suspended unit or a larger cassette arrangement. The sheet includes PKA wall units, PLA four-way cassettes, PEAD ducted units, PVA air handlers and PCA ceiling units. It also lists PAA coils for a furnace-based dual-fuel arrangement; that is a separate design discussed in our intelli-HEAT guide.
| System type | SEER2 range | HSPF2 range |
|---|---|---|
| Standard heat pump | 16.1–24.8 | 8–10.9 |
| Hyper-Heating | 17–23.8 | 8.5–10.1 |
The standard P-Series heading reads “100% Heating at 47, 65% at 17 Degrees, 55% at 5 Degrees, Heating down to -4”. Hyper-Heating P-Series systems carry the same H2i rating: 100% heating capacity at 5°F and continued heating down to -13°F. The sheet also contains cooling-only equipment; those rows are excluded from the heat-pump ranges here. Discuss app control with us when choosing the indoor unit, so the required interface is included in the quote.
Several rooms: ported multi-zone or Smart Multi?
A ported outdoor unit has connections for the indoor units without a branch box. Smart Multi uses a branch box for the M-Series and P-Series indoor arrangements covered here. The box and its installation space belong in the design from the start.
| System family | SEER2 | HSPF2 | Listed indoor-unit limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ported standard | 19.2–21 | 9.1–10 | Up to 2–5, by outdoor model |
| Ported Hyper-Heating | 19.3–20 | 10 | Up to 2–3, by outdoor model |
| Smart Multi standard | 20–23 | 10.4–11 | Up to 4 or 8 M/P indoor units, by model |
| Smart Multi Hyper-Heating | 20–23 | 10.9–12 | Up to 4, 5 or 8 M/P indoor units, by model |
Mitsubishi’s detailed multi-zone tables list heating output at 47°F, 17°F, 5°F and -13°F. Hyper-Heating outdoor units keep 100% of their rated heat at 17°F and at 5°F. Standard units give less: about 68–84% of rated heat at 17°F for ported models and 86–98% for Smart Multi, and less again at 5°F.
Those test points are far colder than a Bay Area winter, which is why heat pumps do so well here. NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals put the average January low at 41.8°F in San Jose, 42.0°F in Oakland, 41.2°F in Concord, 37.8°F in Livermore and 44.5°F at SFO. Freezing nights are few: in January, San Jose and Oakland average about one, Concord about four, Livermore about six and SFO none.
So a typical winter night here is more than 20 degrees warmer than the 17°F test point. A properly sized system runs close to its full rating, and the Hyper-Heating models are rated at 100% far below anything we see. We still check your heating load and the exact indoor combination in Diamond System Builder before we recommend a system.
The maximum number of connections does not mean any set of indoor units will work together. The multi-zone guide also has connection and adapter requirements. We confirm the complete combination, including the branch box where required, rather than choosing an outdoor unit by room count alone.
For a particular space, start with our finished garage, detached ADU or studio or refinished basement guide. Then use the controller compatibility guide to decide how you want to operate each indoor unit.
Installation price and warranty
A Mitsubishi Electric ductless system usually runs about $5,500 to $9,000 for each room or zone, depending on the home. The installation assessment is free and gives you an exact written estimate. A central ducted replacement or dual-fuel installation needs its own quote; the per-zone range is for ductless work.
As a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor, Bay Area HVAC Service registers eligible M-Series and P-Series installations within 90 days for Mitsubishi Electric’s 12-year parts and 12-year compressor limited warranty. The HM, WR, HX and WX wall-mounted series are capped at 10-year parts and 10-year compressor coverage. Extended manufacturer coverage applies to the original purchaser living in a single-family home and does not transfer. It excludes labor. Our standard workmanship warranty is 2 years.
