Finishing a basement adds a room to the heating and cooling plan. It doesn’t establish that the existing system has capacity to serve it. Mitsubishi suggests adding a mini-split when the original system wasn’t sized for the finished basement.
Give the lower level its own assessment
The basement’s needs can differ from rooms above ground. Mitsubishi’s basement guidance points to variable-capacity equipment that adjusts its output to the space. That is a reason to size the proposed system for this room, rather than copy the equipment serving the floor upstairs.
If you want to use the house’s existing ducts instead, we’ll review that proposal too. Bring any current plans for the remodel, including where partitions and doors will be. A family room and a set of separate rooms present different layouts for distributing air.
Work through the physical constraints
At the free installation assessment, we’ll look at headroom, indoor-unit placement, service access and the path to the outdoor unit. Electrical supply and condensate drainage also need a workable plan. We discuss those routes before the quote so you can coordinate them with the refinishing work.
A low wall may suit a floor-mounted unit. If the room has suitable ceiling space, a cassette or concealed ducted arrangement may be worth comparing. A wall-mounted unit is another option where there is room to mount it. Our guide to indoor styles shows how these choices differ.
Cost and warranty questions
The planning range for a Mitsubishi ductless installation is about $5,500 to $9,000 per room or zone. We’ll turn the proposed basement layout into an exact written installation estimate after the free visit. Financing available on approved credit.
Bay Area HVAC Service is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor and operates independently. We register qualifying M-Series and P-Series systems within 90 days of installation. Their limited manufacturer warranty covers parts for 12 years and the compressor for 12 years, except HM, WR, HX and WX wall-mounted series, which are limited to 10 years. The extended coverage applies while the original purchaser occupies the single-family home; it does not transfer or include labor. Our own workmanship coverage is 2 years. You can separately purchase JB Warranties extended labor coverage for up to 12 years.
