Ameristar is Trane and American Standard's budget label: basic ducted ACs, heat pumps, and furnaces priced for budget jobs, built on shared Trane internals. Mountain View has a specific opening for it. Plenty of original Old Mountain View housing was built heat-only, gas furnace and no central AC, because the mild marine summers made cooling optional. Warming summers and daytime remote work have changed that. On a home where the existing ducts are sound enough to carry added cooling airflow, an Ameristar condenser and coil added to the existing furnace is an economical way to get AC into a house that never had it.

The climate keeps the equipment small. Mountain View sits in a marine-influenced zone with morning fog and design cooling around the high 80s, so cooling loads are modest and sizing trends down. A single-stage Ameristar unit covers most of these homes without the inverter premium. The honest limit is the ductwork. In a lot of Old Mountain View homes the original ducts are too tight or compromised to handle added cooling airflow, and forcing a budget ducted system onto bad ducts produces a system that underperforms no matter the brand. When that is the case we say so and steer to ductless.

For ADUs and converted garages, which are a meaningful share of local work since California's ADU streamlining laws, a ducted budget unit is the wrong tool entirely. There we install a single mini-split head. Ameristar is for the main-house ducted retrofit, not the granny flat.

Furnace service and low-NOx replacement. On the heat-only homes that keep gas heat, we service and replace furnaces with low-NOx units that meet the current BAAQMD limits, sized to the actual load rather than the old oversized nameplate.

Sometimes. It works when the existing ducts can carry the added cooling airflow, and for a budget retrofit it is a clean, economical path. But a lot of older Mountain View ducts cannot, and adding cooling to bad ducts disappoints regardless of brand. We inspect the ducts first and tell you honestly which way your house goes.

Should I put an Ameristar ducted unit in my ADU?

No. A ducted budget system is overkill and the wrong shape for an ADU or garage conversion. A single ductless mini-split head is the right answer there: compact, independently controlled, and easier to bring into Title 24 compliance when we document the install. We keep Ameristar for the main-house ducted work.
