Tempstar in San Jose
Tempstar is an ICP brand under Carrier Global, built at the value tier alongside Carrier and Bryant. It shares a lot of its engineering and internal parts with those pricier nameplates, and that is the real reason to consider it: Carrier-family guts at a lower sticker. The honest framing is that it is a value-tier rebadge, so you are buying solid mainstream equipment, not a top-of-the-line modulating system. For a lot of San Jose's 1990s-and-later ducted homes, that is exactly the right tier.
San Jose has the widest HVAC mix in the region and a genuinely hot summer, 85 to 95 with stretches over 100, so cooling capacity drives the equipment choice on almost every project. On homes from the 1990s on with intact ductwork, a ducted Tempstar heat pump or straight AC-and-furnace pairing is a sensible value replacement when the old system reaches end of life. The post-2000 San Jose stock already runs a lot of Goodman and Carrier, so a Tempstar drops into that world cleanly and the parts crossover keeps future service simple.
Where Tempstar does not fit is the Eichlers. The Fairglen tract is a genuine Eichler enclave, built with radiant slabs and no ductwork, and the right answer there is almost always a ductless mini-split, not a ducted brand. Plenty of other mid-century homes around Willow Glen and Cambrian have marginal or missing ducts too. Tempstar is ducted, so if your house has no ducts worth using, we will point you to the ductless route instead of forcing the wrong equipment in.
Tempstar work we do in San Jose
Tempstar AC or heat pump replacement on 20-plus-year systems. On San Jose's 1980s-90s ranches and split-levels with good ducts, a failing condenser at 20-plus years is usually past the point of repair. We size a Tempstar to the cooling load at San Jose's roughly 90-plus design temperature and tie it into the existing ducts where they pass our leakage check.
Heat-pump conversion at furnace end-of-life. For homes weighing another gas furnace against a heat pump, a ducted Tempstar heat pump is a value option that still covers San Jose's mild 35-to-38-degree heating season easily. We run the load calc and check the panel before quoting.
Compressor and TXV diagnostics on hot-weather failures. San Jose's heat exposes weak compressors and metering-valve problems in July and August. On Tempstar units the Carrier-family parts crossover means we can usually source the compressor or board without a long off-brand wait, which matters when a house is sitting at 100 inside.
Capacitor, contactor, and refrigerant-charge service. The bread-and-butter summer calls. A failed run capacitor or pitted contactor kills cooling on the hottest day. We diagnose, verify charge, and credit the $75 diagnostic toward any repair over $200.
