Ameristar in San Carlos
Ameristar is Trane and American Standard's budget ducted line, single-stage air conditioners, heat pumps, and furnaces that trade modulating controls for a lower price. In San Carlos most of our Ameristar work is in White Oaks and Devonshire, blocks of 1950s and 60s ranch homes built on concrete slabs with the original ductwork run flat through the attic. There's no crawlspace to fall back on if a duct run needs rerouting, so the attic is where the real work happens on these houses.
Up toward Big Canyon and the Eaton area the homes get larger and newer, more open floor plans from the 1980s and later, and owners there more often ask about a step up from Ameristar into modulating equipment, because a big open great room shows the difference between single-stage and variable-speed comfort more than a chopped-up 1950s floor plan does. I'll tell you straight when a house is a poor fit for the budget tier rather than sell it anyway.
San Carlos sits in the same mild, marine-influenced band as the rest of the Mid-Peninsula, cooling loads that rarely push hard, which is exactly the kind of climate where a single-stage Ameristar condenser isn't working against itself. The exception is attic temperature. On a slab home with an attic air handler, San Carlos summer attic heat still stresses a blower motor and control board more than the outdoor air temperature alone suggests, so I check attic ventilation as part of any Ameristar quote here.
Ameristar work we do in San Carlos
Attic duct and blower service on slab ranch homes. White Oaks and Devonshire homes route their ductwork through the attic with no crawlspace backup, so a torn boot or a crushed flex run in that attic space is a common find when a room isn't cooling. We also see PSC blower motors on original systems wear out faster than expected from years of high attic heat.
Right-sizing Big Canyon and Eaton area homes. The newer, larger homes above downtown have bigger open floor plans than the original ranch blocks, and an undersized or oversized Ameristar condenser shows up fast as uneven temperatures room to room. We run a full Manual J on these houses instead of matching tonnage to the old system.
Heat exchanger and compressor failure on original systems. On the oldest White Oaks furnaces we're checking for a cracked heat exchanger, which is a safety issue and not a repair, and on the condenser side a seized or shorted compressor after decades of run time. Either one is a replacement conversation, and Ameristar is usually the right budget answer if the ducts underneath are still sound.
