Ameristar in Redwood City
Ameristar is the value tier under Trane and American Standard, single-stage ducted ACs, heat pumps, and furnaces that share hardware with the premium lines but skip the modulating controls. Redwood City covers more housing variety than most cities its size. Down in Redwood Shores the homes and townhomes are newer, 1980s and 90s construction on waterfront lots with plenty of glass facing the bay. Up in Emerald Hills the lots are wooded and the homes older and larger. In between, Mount Carmel and Redwood Village have the original 1940s and 50s bungalows where most of our Ameristar replacement work actually happens.
The climate argument for Redwood City is a little different than its foggier neighbors up the Peninsula. Less marine layer reaches this far into the bay on a typical summer afternoon, so cooling loads here run a notch higher than San Carlos or Belmont a few miles north. It's not a dramatic difference, but it's enough that I size Ameristar equipment off Redwood City's own design numbers rather than borrowing a load calc from a neighboring town.
Emerald Hills adds its own wrinkle. Big oak and pine canopy over a lot of those homes actually cuts the cooling load below what the square footage alone would suggest, but that same canopy drops needles and debris straight onto a condenser coil year-round. On the Redwood Shores side it's the opposite problem, open lots with no tree cover and steady bay wind across the coil, which is a different kind of maintenance conversation.
