Ducane in Redwood City
Ducane is Lennox's value ducted line, simpler equipment than premium Lennox, priced lower, and built on parts that are generally easier for us to source. Redwood City has enough housing variety that where Ducane fits changes block by block. The older tract homes in Mount Carmel and Friendly Acres, mostly single-story with original or first-replacement ducted systems, are a straightforward match for a right-sized Ducane furnace and AC.
Redwood Shores is different. Those are newer homes and townhomes on the water, many built with tighter mechanical spaces and higher-efficiency expectations baked into the original spec, and a few sit close enough to the bay that we look at corrosion exposure on the outdoor unit the way we would on a coastal install. Emerald Hills, up at the higher elevation, runs larger custom homes where multi-zone premium equipment is more often the right call.
Redwood City also carries the local reputation of milder temperatures than its inland neighbors, tied to the old 'Climate Best by Government Test' claim on the city seal. That mild swing matters for sizing. A lot of the equipment we replace here was oversized to begin with, so we run the load calculation on the house in front of us instead of matching the old tonnage.
Ducane work we do in Redwood City
Right-sizing replacements in Mount Carmel and Friendly Acres. Original systems in this older tract housing were frequently oversized by rule of thumb rather than calculation. On a Ducane replacement we run a Manual J load calc, and it's common for the correct tonnage to come in smaller than what's currently installed, which fixes short-cycling and uneven cooling at the same time.
Condensate drain clogs in tighter mechanical closets. Newer construction in Redwood Shores and some of the downtown infill puts the furnace and air handler in a compact closet with a condensate line that doesn't always have generous slope. A clogged drain trips the float switch and shuts the system down as a safety measure, and it's one of the more common service calls we run regardless of brand.
Igniter and flame sensor failures on older Ducane furnaces. On the original-equipment furnaces still running in the older neighborhoods, a cracked hot-surface igniter or a fouled flame sensor is the usual reason for a no-heat call. Both are common Ducane parts and a repair using a part we usually stock in most cases.
