Heil in Los Gatos
Heil is the value tier of the ICP family, running the same platforms as Tempstar and Comfortmaker, with parts that cross over between all three. Los Gatos housing is unusually varied, so the question is rarely whether Heil is good and more often whether a ducted system of any brand is the right approach for a given house. On the hillside customs and newer luxury infill that already have ductwork and multiple zones, Heil fits cleanly as one of those zones.
The hillside microclimate is the real challenge here. A large home with a west-facing upper-level suite can have one room calling for cooling late in the afternoon while the lower level sits in morning shade. Cooling loads vary widely by elevation and orientation, so single-zone systems chase that swing all afternoon and lose. We default to dual or three-zone setups on the bigger hillside homes, and Heil works well on the zones that don't carry the worst west-facing load. On the rooms that do, a supplemental ductless head usually beats pushing a ducted system harder.
Downtown is where we change the recommendation entirely. The older Victorians and Craftsman bungalows often have no forced air at all, just gravity furnaces or wall heaters. Adding central ducted HVAC there means major architectural surgery, and no ducted brand, Heil included, changes that math. Our standard call for those homes is a multi-head ductless mini-split, one condenser feeding a head per primary room, which preserves the architecture. Heil also sits below the variable-speed modulation and quiet operation of the premium lines, so on the toughest zones we match the brand to the load rather than forcing one line across a house this varied.
Heil work we do in Los Gatos
Heil zone within a multi-zone hillside install. On the larger hillside customs we build dual or three-zone systems with separate equipment per floor. Heil fits the zones that don't carry the worst west-facing afternoon load, while we spec quieter variable-speed equipment or a supplemental ductless head where the microclimate demands it.
Hybrid central-plus-ductless for problem rooms. When a west-facing room overwhelms the central system, we keep a Heil central system for the bulk of the house and add a dedicated ductless head for the problem room. It's cheaper than oversizing the whole system to chase one room's afternoon peak.
Board and electrical service on Heil and Tempstar units. Routine service runs to the usual electrical-component wear and the occasional control board. The shared ICP boards across Heil, Tempstar, and Comfortmaker mean we can usually source the right part fast instead of leaving a hillside zone down for days.
Condenser placement and line-set routing on steep lots. Hillside lots make condenser placement and line-set routing the hard part of the job. We plan placement, run length, and condensate drainage around the grade at the estimate, before any Heil equipment is sized or ordered.
