Maytag in Albany
Nortek and Broan build Maytag's HVAC lineup under license, not the company known for washers and dryers, and the ducted gas furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps that carry the name sit in the mid-market tier, with some models backed by a parts warranty longer than most. In a city as compact as Albany, whether Maytag fits comes down almost entirely to whether the house has ducts, and most don't.
At 1.8 square miles, Albany is nearly all 1920s to 1940s stucco and wood bungalows on small lots along the Marin Avenue grid, built with wall furnaces and no central ducting. Cutting new duct runs into one of these small houses isn't practical on a lot this size, and Maytag has no mini-split line we'd put up against Daikin or Mitsubishi. So for the typical Albany bungalow, we steer to ductless.
Where Maytag does make sense is the rare Albany home, usually a later addition or infill build, that already has working ductwork. Albany's climate is the same marine-layer cool as Berkeley, so heating carries the year and central air conditioning is close to nonexistent in the older stock. On the ducted homes we do find, the Maytag conversation is usually a gas furnace replacement or a heat pump conversion. Every gas furnace call gets a combustion and CO test from us, and we don't hide that Maytag's HVAC line is built under license rather than by the appliance company, so you understand exactly what you're buying.
Maytag work we do in Albany
Maytag furnace replacement where ducts exist. For the rare Albany home that already runs forced-air, usually a later addition or infill build, a Maytag gas furnace is a straightforward, dependable replacement. Before quoting anything, we walk the existing ducts, calculate the load, and make sure that ductwork is actually worth building the new system around. New installs carry our 10-year parts warranty, with labor at 2 years standard (10 years on our maintenance plan).
Heat pump conversions on existing duct systems. When an aging gas furnace on one of Albany's ducted homes hits replacement age, a Maytag heat pump is often the cleaner path given the mild marine-layer climate. After checking the panel and the ducts, we put the actual cost on your written estimate.
Combustion and CO testing on older gas units. Older wall furnaces still running in Albany's bungalow stock eventually reach the point where the heat exchanger needs a serious look. We run combustion analysis and a CO check before recommending repair versus replacement, Maytag or otherwise. Safety first, then the cost conversation.
Honest steering to ductless where it fits. If your Albany bungalow has no ductwork, which is nearly all of them, we'll tell you a ducted Maytag is the wrong tool and recommend a ductless mini-split instead, sized for the room or the ADU that needs it. We install Daikin and Mitsubishi for that. We won't sell you ducts a house this size was never built to carry.
