Tempstar in Piedmont
Tempstar is ICP's value brand under Carrier Global, sharing engineering with Carrier and Bryant at a lower price. It's a rebadge, we don't dress that up, but the Carrier-family parts crossover is genuinely good, which matters on a long-lived install in an older home.
Piedmont is almost entirely large 1910s through 1930s estate homes, Tudors, Mediterraneans, and Colonials in the Oakland hills, and most were built for heat, not cooling. That shapes where a Tempstar fits. On a home with sound, properly sized ductwork, a ducted Tempstar heat pump is a sensible value choice and covers both the heating these houses need and the cooling owners increasingly want. But many Piedmont estates have undersized original ducts, plaster walls, and finished basements that make routing a real consideration, and on those we'd re-engineer the ductwork or go ductless before we'd hang a Tempstar air handler on ducts that can't carry the load.
The climate helps. Piedmont is mild and marine-influenced, rarely above the mid-80s in summer and well above freezing most winter nights, so a standard-efficiency Tempstar heat pump runs efficiently year-round. On the bigger multi-story floor plans we almost always zone the system, because a three-story Piedmont house heats and cools unevenly otherwise. Tempstar works within a zoned setup; we just make sure the equipment and the dampers are matched to the actual load floor by floor.
Tempstar work we do in Piedmont
Zoned ducted Tempstar on larger floor plans. Three-story Piedmont estates run hot upstairs and cold down low without zoning. We pair a ducted Tempstar heat pump with a zoning system and balance it floor by floor so the whole house holds temperature evenly.
Re-engineering ductwork before reuse. A lot of these homes limp along on original ducts that were undersized from the start. Before we put a Tempstar on them, we check the duct sizing against the load and rebuild what won't carry the airflow rather than assuming the old system was right.
Ductless where ducting is destructive. For additions, converted attics, and primary suites in finished estate homes, running new ducts is destructive. We'll recommend ductless over a ducted Tempstar in those spots and say so plainly, even though it's a different product.
Service on existing ICP-family equipment. On existing Tempstar and ICP-family units we service control boards, capacitors, and contactors. The Carrier and Bryant parts crossover keeps replacements easy to source from East Bay supply houses.
