Friedrich in Piedmont
Piedmont is largely older estate homes built for heat and never for cooling. Most of our serious work here is whole-home: heat-pump conversions and zoned systems to balance the temperature swings between floors of a multi-story plaster house. Friedrich plays a narrower role. It is a room-and-zone brand, and in Piedmont it fits the defined add-on space such as a converted attic or a finished-basement in-law unit that the original system was never designed to serve.
The climate is mild and marine-influenced, with moderate summers and cool but rarely freezing winters. That keeps the cooling load on any single-room unit light, so a Friedrich through-the-wall or single-zone ductless unit handles an added space without strain. For the main estate, though, we spec a designed system, almost always a zoned heat pump from a line we run deeper on, because a multi-story Piedmont house heats and cools unevenly and needs the engineering. Friedrich is not the brand for that job and we do not pretend otherwise.
There is a real tradeoff in these homes. Plaster walls and finished spaces make any through-wall penetration something to scope carefully, and a window or room unit looks out of place on a period facade. So we use Friedrich where it stays discreet and appropriate, the secondary or accessory space, and we keep the estate's primary system on a properly designed multi-zone install. Whichever way it goes, the recommendation and the reason are on the written estimate.
Friedrich work we do in Piedmont
Through-the-wall units in finished basements and in-law spaces. Piedmont estates often have a finished lower level or in-law space outside the main duct layout. We set a Friedrich through-the-wall unit in an exterior wall, scoping the plaster and the structure carefully so the penetration is clean and the period exterior is respected.
Single-zone ductless for converted attics and primary suites. Where running new duct through a finished estate would be destructive, a Friedrich single-zone ductless head conditions a converted attic or added suite cleanly. We route the line set to a discreet condenser location chosen to suit the home and the lot.
ADU and accessory-unit conditioning. Backyard and accessory units in Piedmont need their own small heating and cooling. We install a Friedrich single-zone unit sized to the space, on a dedicated circuit, independent of the main estate system.
Service on existing room and through-wall units. We diagnose and repair Friedrich room and through-wall units, typically a capacitor or fan-motor failure, occasionally a condensate problem. On a through-wall replacement we reuse the existing sleeve where the dimensions match rather than cutting a new opening in plaster.
