Ruud HVAC in San Bruno

San Bruno sits under the SFO flight path on one side and climbs into the fog-clearing hills of Crestmoor on the other, and both of those facts change how I spec a Ruud system here.

Ruud in San Bruno

San Bruno splits into two different houses depending on where you stand. Down near El Camino and the Caltrain corridor, homes sit in the marine layer a good part of the day and keep their windows shut against approach noise off SFO more than fog. Up in Crestmoor, Rollingwood, and Portola Highlands, split-level homes climb above the fog and pick up real sun on plenty of afternoons. A Ruud furnace or heat pump earns its keep differently in each spot.

Because a lot of the flatland houses near the airport keep windows closed most of the year for the noise, not just the weather, the HVAC system is doing more of the comfort work than it would in a quieter city where people crack a window on a mild day. I take that into account when I size a Ruud system down there, since the house leans on it harder than the climate alone would suggest.

The split-level hillside homes usually have the furnace or air handler tucked into a stairwell closet or a short crawl space rather than an open attic, which changes how long a Ruud service call or replacement actually takes, and I plan for that up front.

Ruud work we do in San Bruno

Sizing for hillside sun versus flatland fog. I have corrected Ruud systems in Crestmoor and Rollingwood that were undersized because the original install used a flatland San Bruno load instead of accounting for the extra sun those hillside blocks pick up once they clear the marine layer.

Split-level access on hillside furnace and air handler swaps. A Ruud air handler wedged into a stairwell closet or a short crawl space in a Rollingwood split-level takes more time to pull and reset than one in an open attic. I scope that access before I quote a replacement so the number on the estimate holds.

Furnace ignition faults in the noise-sealed flatland homes. The older flatland houses near El Camino run their furnaces hard through the foggy months with windows kept shut for the airport noise, and worn igniters and fouled flame sensors are the calls I see most from that stretch. The $99 diagnostic confirms which one it is, and it's credited toward the repair.
