Before you book an HVAC visit, run through the thermostat, breaker, filter, float switch, outdoor unit, registers, furnace door, and mini-split lights. Then the short list of parts you should never touch, and when it's time for a $99 diagnostic.

Some no-heat and no-cool calls end with the tech pushing a furnace door closed or flipping a thermostat from Fan On back to Auto. That’s a $99 visit for something you could have found in ten minutes. Here’s the list I’d run before calling anyone, plus what to leave alone no matter how handy you are. None of it needs tools, and none of it involves opening a panel that’s held on with screws.

Thermostat: mode, setpoint, and batteries

Start here. It’s free, and it’s often the answer.

Check the mode. Cool for cooling, Heat for heat. Off means off. Then check the setpoint against the room. Cooling won’t start until the setpoint is below room temperature, and heating won’t start until it’s above. A hold or an active schedule can override the number you just typed in.

Check the fan setting. Fan On runs the blower between cycles too, so you get room-temperature air from the vents and it feels like the system quit. Auto is normal.

A blank battery thermostat usually just needs batteries. A smart thermostat that lost power or WiFi needs a few minutes to reboot, and it can come back in the wrong mode or holding an old schedule. And after any change, most thermostats hold the compressor off for a few minutes as a built-in delay. Don’t keep toggling it.

Breaker and disconnect

A tripped breaker sits in the middle of its travel, not fully off. Push it all the way off and then back on, once. If it trips again the moment you flip it, leave it off and call. A breaker that won’t hold is protecting you from a real fault.

Outside, the condenser has a small disconnect box on the wall next to it, with a pull-out block or a switch. Make sure it’s in and on. Don’t open the unit’s own electrical panel.

At the furnace, a plain light switch on the unit or a nearby wall is the furnace power switch. It gets flipped off by accident. Make sure it’s on.

Filter

Pull it and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, replace it. The arrow on the frame points toward the furnace or air handler, not toward the return grille.

A choked filter starves the indoor coil until it ices over in cooling, and overheats the furnace until the high-limit switch shuts it down in heating. If you find ice on the coil or the copper line, set the thermostat to Off with the fan on and let it thaw completely before running cooling again. Then fix the airflow, or the ice comes back.

Condensate float switch

If the AC stopped on its own while the thermostat is still calling for cooling, look at the air handler. Most systems have a float switch on the drain pan or in the drain line. When the drain clogs and the pan fills, the switch cuts the system off on purpose so water doesn’t end up in your ceiling or floor.

Standing water in the pan, or a wet spot near the unit, tells you what happened. Don’t lift the float to get the system running again. That’s the part protecting your drywall. Outdoor unit: clearance and the fan

Walk outside while the thermostat is calling for cooling.

Is the fan turning? If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor unit is silent, or it hums and clicks without the fan spinning up, stop. Set the thermostat to Off and call. Don’t poke the fan with a stick and don’t open the cabinet. A humming, non-starting unit usually means a failed capacitor or contactor, both next to live power.

Is the unit breathing? Leaves, cottonwood fluff, grass clippings, and shrubs growing into the fins all cut its capacity. With the thermostat set to Off, pull loose debris off the outside by hand and cut back anything growing against it. Leave the fins, the grille, and anything inside the cabinet alone. Bent fins are worse than the leaves were.

Registers and returns

Open every supply register, including the ones someone closed to push air elsewhere. Closing vents doesn’t move air to other rooms; it raises duct pressure and helps freeze coils and trip furnace limits. Move furniture, rugs, and boxes off return grilles, and if your return has a filter in the wall grille, that’s the filter to check.

Furnace door switch and status light

Every furnace has a plunger-style safety switch behind the blower compartment door. If the door isn’t fully seated, the switch stays open and the furnace does nothing. It’s the classic failure after a filter change. Push the door in until it latches, then try again. Don’t tape the switch down or bypass it, and the same goes for pressure switches, limit switches, and any other lockout. A furnace can look like it’s running fine after a bypass while a real hazard sits behind it.

Most furnaces also blink a status light through a sight glass in the door. Steady usually means normal. A blink pattern is a fault code, with the legend printed inside the door panel. Write the pattern down. Reset once at the power switch if you like, but if the code comes back, that’s a diagnostic, not a reset problem.

Error lights on mini-splits

A blinking light on a ductless indoor head is a fault code. Note the blink pattern or the code on the remote, then run the same three checks: pull and rinse the filters, confirm the breaker, and look at the drain for standing water. A single power reset at the breaker, off for a couple of minutes, clears some passing faults. If the light comes right back, the reset hid the symptom and the cause is still there.

What not to touch

This part matters more than the checklist.

Refrigerant. You can’t buy it without an EPA 608 certification, and a low system has a leak that needs finding, not a top-off. Recharge cans from the internet don’t fix leaks.

Gas valves and burners. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility before you call us. Don’t relight anything, don’t turn a gas valve back on, and don’t run the furnace to see if it’s fine.

Capacitors hold a charge after the power is off and can hurt you. Testing or swapping one isn’t a screwdriver job.

Wiring, contactors, and control boards: anything behind a panel that needs a tool to open. Line voltage lives there, and one wrong probe can take out a board that was fine.

And every safety switch: float switch, door switch, pressure switch, high limit, flame sensor. If one of them is stopping the system, it’s doing its job.

When to book a diagnostic

If you’ve run the list and the system still isn’t right, or you hit any of the stop signs above (a breaker that re-trips, a humming outdoor unit, ice, water in the pan, a burning smell, a fault code that comes back), that’s the point to call. Before you do, jot down what runs and what doesn’t, any sounds or smells, whether the breaker held, any blink pattern, and what you already tried. It shortens the visit.

Most thermostats hold the compressor off for a few minutes after any change to protect it, so wait before assuming a fault. If the fan is set to On, the blower runs between cycles and blows room-temperature air, which feels like the system quit. Set the fan to Auto, confirm the mode, and give it a few minutes. If nothing starts after that, check the breaker and the outdoor disconnect.

My AC shut off by itself and there's water under the air handler. What happened?

Can I clean my outdoor AC unit myself?

Pulling leaves and debris off the outside by hand with the thermostat set to Off is fine. Beyond that, be careful. The fins bend easily and a pressure washer will flatten them. Leave the grille, the fan, and anything inside the cabinet to a tech, since the capacitor and contactor in there sit next to live power.
