Power comes back on and the AC either ignores you completely or runs and blows warm air. Most of the time it’s one of four things: a tripped breaker, a thermostat that lost its mind, a stuck or burnt contactor out at the condenser, or a fried control board. Work through them roughly in that order, because that’s roughly how often each one turns out to be the culprit.

What’s Likely Going On, In Order

Tripped breaker. The most common cause by a good margin, especially after a rough outage or a surge when the grid snapped back on. Look at your panel for a breaker sitting in the middle position, not fully switched to “off.” That’s tripped, not off, and it’s fine to reset it once.

Thermostat lost its settings. Battery-powered thermostats pick the worst time to die. Smart thermostats need a minute or two to reboot and reconnect to your WiFi, and sometimes come back in the wrong mode or holding an old schedule. A hardwired thermostat with a blank screen usually means that circuit, or a small fuse feeding it inside your furnace or air handler, still isn’t getting power.

Stuck or burnt contactor. The contactor is a relay out at the condenser. It’s the part that pulls in and sends power to the compressor and outdoor fan when the thermostat calls for cooling. A surge can weld the contacts shut, so the system runs nonstop and won’t shut off, or burn them so they never pull in at all, so the indoor blower runs but the outside unit just sits there. I see this a lot after storms.

Control board damage. Less common, but it’s the one everyone worries about. The board that sequences your system usually has a small fuse built in to protect itself when there’s a surge or a short. Sometimes that’s the whole story and it’s a cheap part. Sometimes the surge takes out the board itself, which costs a lot more than a fuse and isn’t something you swap yourself.

The Safe Reset Sequence

If your AC isn’t cooling right after the power comes back, here’s the order I’d work through before touching anything with a tool:

  1. Give it a few minutes. Don’t flip the AC back on the instant the lights come back, especially after a neighborhood-wide outage. The compressor needs a little time for pressure to equalize, and every AC on your block calling for power at once is part of why breakers trip again.
  2. Check the breaker. Go to the main panel and look for one sitting in the middle, not all the way off. Reset it once, firmly. If it trips again right away, stop. Leave it off and call. A breaker that won’t hold is telling you something’s actually wrong, not asking for a second try.
  3. Check the filter. Pull it and look. If it’s gray and dense, swap it. This usually isn’t why an outage knocked out your cooling, but it’s free to rule out and a clogged filter makes every other problem worse.
  4. Check the thermostat settings. Confirm it’s set to Cool, the temperature is set below room temp, and the schedule or hold didn’t reset into something odd. Give a smart thermostat a few minutes to finish reconnecting before you assume it’s broken.
  5. Look for obvious blockages. Walk the house and make sure supply vents aren’t closed and returns aren’t blocked by furniture. Outside, glance at the condenser for anything that blew into it or landed on it during whatever caused the outage. Don’t pull the fan grille or reach inside, just look.

While you’re doing this, note what you’re seeing: does the indoor blower run but the outdoor unit stay silent? Does the outdoor unit hum or click without actually starting? Any burning smell, sparking, or a breaker that trips again immediately? Write it down. That’s exactly what a tech needs to hear to start the visit already knowing where to look, instead of re-doing everything you already checked.

How We Diagnose It

When a tech gets out there, it’s not guesswork. We check for voltage at the disconnect and at the unit, then check whether the 24-volt control signal from the thermostat is actually reaching the contactor. We test the contactor itself under load, since pitted or welded contacts don’t always look obviously bad just sitting there. If the board’s suspect, we check its internal fuse and transformer output before writing off the whole board, because plenty of “bad board” calls turn out to be a blown fuse instead of a dead board once someone actually tests it instead of guessing.
