Gree in Richmond
Gree is one of the largest HVAC manufacturers in the world. A lot of equipment sold under other names comes off Gree lines, but the units we install under the Gree label are its own value ductless mini-splits. They're the budget alternative to Mitsubishi and Daikin. Richmond's climate is forgiving for that kind of equipment. Summer highs sit in the 60s to low 70s with the bay fog, winters are mild, and a heat pump rarely sees a cold snap that would stress it. You can stay comfortable here without cold-climate-rated gear, and that's where a value brand can pencil out.
Gree ductless does its best work in the older central and south Richmond housing that was built without cooling and runs an aging gas wall furnace for heat. A single-head Gree mini-split gives one room heating and the occasional warm-week cooling for a lot less than a Mitsubishi equivalent. Point Richmond's historic homes and the 1990s-2000s Marina Bay developments are the other common candidates, usually an addition or a converted attic room that the central system never reached.
I'll be straight about the tradeoff. Gree's warranty network and parts availability are thinner than Daikin's or Mitsubishi's, and the control board is the part we tend to replace on these units. We put that on the estimate. If you plan to be in the house 15 years and want the strongest backing, we'll point you to a premium line. If you want a value head on a room in a mild coastal climate, Gree is a reasonable call and we install and service it.
Gree work we do in Richmond
Single-head ductless on heating-first homes. Most Richmond Gree installs are one wall head in a home that never had ductwork or AC. We mount the head, route the line set to a condenser on the side yard, and set it up primarily for heat with cooling available for the few warm weeks. The bay climate means the heat pump almost never works hard.
Adding conditioning to Marina Bay and Point Richmond rooms. Converted attics, sunrooms, and additions that the original system never reached are good single-zone candidates. We size the head to the room load, not the whole house, and keep the line run short to protect efficiency.
Control board and sensor diagnostics. The board and indoor thermistors are what we tend to replace on Gree heads. We diagnose the fault, confirm the part is available before we commit to the repair, and tell you honestly when a board replacement on an older value unit is close to the cost of a new head.
Refrigerant and line set service. On a Gree head that's losing capacity we pressure-test the line set and flare connections. Flare leaks at the head are common on budget mini-splits if they weren't torqued correctly on the original install. We re-flare and recharge to spec.
