Portola Valley homes sit on wooded acreage in the oak-and-redwood hills off Alpine Road and Portola Road, from large custom houses to Eichler-influenced homes in the Ladera-adjacent pockets to ranch properties toward Skyline. Most of these carry a zoned system sized to the house, and that is premium-brand territory. The bulk of our Portola Valley work is Mitsubishi and Daikin equipment. Cooper & Hunter is not the centerpiece, and I am upfront about that.
Where C&H does fit is the single isolated zone: a converted studio over a garage, a ranch outbuilding, a back room in an older Eichler-influenced house that the original system never reached. Running new ductwork through a finished home in these hills is destructive, and a premium mini-split is more machine than a low-use corner needs. A single Cooper & Hunter head handles that space at a value price, and on the outer roads where a property runs on septic and well, a simple self-contained unit is also just less complicated to tie in.
The wooded terrain and the wildfire-aware nature of this town both factor into any install. Condenser placement has to account for defensible space and tree cover, not just the grade. For a primary living space, especially one part of a PG&E shutoff backup plan, I lean premium. For a converted studio or outbuilding, C&H earns its keep, and I put the comparison in writing.
