Friedrich in Portola Valley
Most Portola Valley homes run a zoned ducted system on the main house, and the central equipment we install there is usually Daikin, Mitsubishi, or Carrier. Friedrich lives at a different part of the property. Friedrich plays in the room-and-zone space: ductless mini-splits, through-the-wall units, and quality room AC units. On these properties that means the converted studio over a garage, a ranch outbuilding toward Skyline, or a detached office off Portola Road where pulling ducts through finished walls would be destructive and expensive.
The through-the-wall and PTAC units from Friedrich are well made, and their ductless line is a fair mid-tier option. We are upfront about where it sits. For the main house's system, especially on a home built around a PG&E shutoff backup plan, the variable-speed Mitsubishi and Daikin platforms have deeper engineering, and that is what we usually spec there. Where Friedrich earns its place is the single-room or two-room problem: a clean, quiet head on the wall of a converted studio, one small condenser tucked near the tree line, and no demolition of the main house.
The wooded terrain and the wildfire-aware building rules here add the same constraints to a Friedrich install as any other brand. We plan the condenser location around defensible space clearances, and on a long line-set run out to a ranch outbuilding or detached office, we size the refrigerant lines for the distance rather than assuming the box-spec default covers it. On the outer roads with septic and well setups, we also confirm the electrical panel before we quote it.
