Every ductless mini-split depends on a data link between the indoor head and the outdoor condenser, a low-voltage wire bundled with the refrigerant lines. Break that link and the head faults out and shuts down, whether or not anything else about the system is actually wrong. Albany's small lots have pushed a lot of installs into basement units and backyard ADUs, and this fault shows up regularly across the whole city, not just in one type of home.
Most of Albany's housing is compact 1920s and 1940s stucco and wood bungalows on tight lots along the Marin Avenue grid, and the comms wire on a mini-split here typically runs a short but tight route through a wall penetration to reach an outdoor unit tucked into a small side yard. Common causes

A wire pinched where it enters the wall. On Albany's small lots, the outdoor condenser usually sits close to the house, but the comms wire still has to pass through a wall penetration alongside the line set, and that tight routing is where it tends to get pinched or chafed. We continuity-test the full run and look closely at that penetration before assuming a board is bad.
Corrosion building up on the outdoor terminal. Albany sits under the same marine layer as Berkeley, and that persistent damp works into outdoor terminal connections over the years, especially on a unit squeezed into a narrow side yard with limited airflow to dry out. We open the outdoor cabinet, clean or re-land the terminal, and reseal it.
A control board that stopped answering. Either control board, indoor or outdoor, can fail on its own and simply drop the handshake with the other side. We read the fault code the system is throwing, verify voltage right at the board, and confirm that board is the actual failure before it goes on any estimate.
A power or grounding problem at the condenser. Wiring can be completely intact and the comms link can still drop if the power feeding the outdoor unit is weak or the ground is poor. We meter both at the condenser to separate an electrical supply problem from an actual wiring fault.

- Check that the data conductor is landed correctly at both the head and the condenser, not crossed.
- Continuity-test the wire and examine the wall penetration for pinching or wear.
- Open the outdoor terminal block and look for corrosion from ongoing moisture exposure.
- Meter voltage and ground at the condenser before considering a board replacement.
