Every ductless mini-split relies on a data link between the indoor head and the outdoor condenser, a low-voltage conductor bundled right alongside the refrigerant lines. Break that link and the head throws a fault and shuts down, even though nothing about the refrigerant circuit itself is wrong. With mini-splits going into so many El Cerrito homes, especially sun-facing rooms up in the hills, we get called out on this fault on a regular basis.
Much of El Cerrito's housing is 1940s and 1960s ranches and split-levels climbing off Moeser Lane and Barrett Avenue toward the Wildcat Canyon ridge, plus stucco bungalows in the flats near San Pablo Avenue. Mini-splits on these homes typically have their comms wire routed up an exterior stucco wall alongside the line set. A pinched conductor at that wall penetration, reversed polarity left over from a past install, or a corroded terminal at the outdoor unit will all break the link, and the flats near San Pablo Avenue see more of that fog and damp working on outdoor terminals than the sunnier hillside lots do.

Common causes
Data wires landed backwards during a past install. The data terminals on a mini-split only work one way, and if whoever installed or last repaired the system crossed or reversed them, the head simply never establishes a connection with the condenser. We pull the manufacturer's wiring diagram and check every landing against it, and on plenty of these calls that's the entire repair.
A pinch point where the wire passes through the wall. On a stucco-walled home climbing the hills off Moeser Lane or Barrett Avenue, the comms wire shares a wall penetration with the line set, and the tight routing around a grade change is exactly where it tends to get pinched or worn through. We run a continuity test on the whole length and physically inspect that penetration point before we ever consider a board bad.
Moisture corrosion on the outdoor terminal block. Fog and damp settle into the flats near San Pablo Avenue more than they do up on the sunnier hillside lots, and that moisture works into outdoor terminal connections over the years, raising resistance until the data signal can't get through cleanly. We open the outdoor unit's cabinet, clean the terminal or re-land the wire, and seal it against the weather going forward.
A control board that's lost the handshake. Either the indoor or the outdoor control board can fail internally and simply stop responding to the other side. We read whatever fault code the head is showing, check voltage right at the board, and only replace it once we've confirmed that's genuinely the failed part, not just the symptom.
Weak supply voltage or a poor ground. Even with wiring that's intact end to end, a weak power supply or a marginal ground at the outdoor unit can degrade the comms signal enough to drop the connection. We meter both voltage and ground there to rule a power issue in or out before we chase anything in the wiring.
How we diagnose it
- Pull whatever fault code the head is displaying and match it against the manufacturer's comms-fault reference.
- Confirm the data conductor lands correctly at both ends and hasn't been reversed.
- Run a continuity test on the full length of wire and inspect the wall penetration closely for pinch or wear.
- Open the outdoor unit and check the terminal block for moisture corrosion.
- Meter supply voltage and ground at the condenser before we consider a board replacement.
