Wet weather makes a furnace intake and exhaust worth observing, especially when a high-efficiency system has exterior terminations near a wall, walkway, planting bed, or covered area. The check is visual. It is not permission to open the furnace, remove a pipe, or clear a combustion path with a tool.

Find the visible terminations

Use the equipment instructions or an existing service record to identify the intake and exhaust outlets. Do not assume every pipe near a furnace serves the same purpose. Look from a safe position and keep away from hot exhaust, moving equipment, ladders, and wet electrical areas.

Record the location, condition, and nearby plants or stored items. Note leaves, mud, standing water, damaged caps, loose-looking sections, snow or ice where relevant, and anything newly placed near the outlet. Do not remove a cover or pull at a pipe to test it.

Do not insert a hand, stick, wire, brush, hose, or other object into an intake or exhaust. Do not drill a drain hole, add a screen, relocate a termination, or tape a joint. A change to the vent arrangement can affect combustion and equipment safety.

Observe the area after rain

After wet weather, look again without touching the termination. Note pooled water, a new drip, mud, debris, damage from a branch, or a discharge pattern that differs from the normal record. Do not decide that visible moisture means a specific internal fault.

If the furnace is operating, record unusual sounds, repeated starts, a status message, or a system that runs and then stops. Do not stand in the exhaust path or place a hand near hot discharge. A photo from a safe distance can be more useful than a close inspection.

If water appears inside the home or around the furnace, protect nearby material only if safe and record the location. Do not open the cabinet to trace a drain, pressure switch, heat exchanger, or vent connection.

Separate vent observations from furnace symptoms

A furnace that will not start may have a thermostat, power, airflow, ignition, control, or safety issue. A visible exterior pipe does not prove that the pipe caused the symptom. Record whether the thermostat calls for heat, whether the blower responds, and whether the furnace stops during a sequence.

Look at an accessible filter and record its condition. Confirm that normal returns and registers are not blocked. Do not bypass the filter or any safety control to see if the system runs longer.

Do not use a flame to check combustion, measure live voltage, adjust gas pressure, or remove a burner panel. Do not reset a tripping breaker repeatedly. These checks belong with a qualified technician.

Stop for danger

If you smell gas, leave the area and follow the appropriate utility or emergency instructions. Do not operate switches near a suspected leak or try to locate it with a flame. If there is smoke, scorching, arcing, damaged wiring, or a strong burning odor, turn the furnace off through normal controls only if safe and keep clear.

Repeated lockout, unusual combustion noise, or a system that fails after every call is an escalation signal. Do not bridge a pressure switch, rollout control, limit, or fuse. A safety device is not a blockage to work around.

Create a weather-ready record

Keep the equipment model if visible without a panel removal, normal thermostat mode and set point, vent locations, exterior photos, weather timing, sounds, display messages, filter condition, water or odor notes, and the last known normal heat. State whether the condition appeared immediately after rain or only later.

Compare the exterior with the furnace response

Keep a normal-weather photo or note of the intake and exhaust so a later change can be described. Do not make the weather timing proof that the vent caused the failure.

If the system operates but produces an unusual odor, repeated start, or short run, preserve the sequence and stop for safety concerns. A clean-looking termination does not prove that the internal vent, condensate, pressure sensing, or combustion path is clear. A visible obstruction does not prove which internal part needs attention.

Do not put a cover over the termination, redirect exhaust, or protect it with a temporary enclosure. Do not use a leaf blower or hose aimed into the pipe. Any change to intake or exhaust arrangement should follow the equipment documentation and qualified service process.

Keep the weather record with the model, service history, and access notes. This gives the technician a before-and-after comparison without asking the homeowner to enter a combustion area.
