Write down the pattern instead of timing it against an invented threshold.

Do not cover the outdoor unit, scrape frost, pour water on the coil, or use a heater to force a cycle. Keep hands away from the fan and coil.

Observe the outdoor unit safely

From outside the cabinet, record if the fan runs, the unit is silent, it starts and stops, or a new sound appears. Note leaves or objects close to the unit without reaching through the grille or moving the cabinet.
