That smell that hits when the AC kicks on, somewhere between wet socks and an old basement, is one of the most common calls I get in July. The good news: it’s rarely dangerous and it’s very fixable. The bad news: the source is almost always inside the indoor unit, growing on surfaces you can’t see, which is why air fresheners and vent sprays never make it stay gone.
Here’s what’s actually causing it, what you can safely do yourself, and where the line is.
Why the Smell Shows Up at Startup
Your evaporator coil, the cold coil inside the indoor unit, pulls moisture out of the air every time the AC runs. That’s normal, it’s how dehumidification works. But it means the coil and the pan under it stay wet for hours after each cycle. Add darkness, add the fine layer of dust that gets past every filter, and you’ve got food, water, and shade. Mold and bacteria don’t need an invitation.
While the system sits idle, the growth builds up. When the blower starts, that first rush of air picks up the odor and pushes it through every supply vent in the house at once. That’s why the smell is strongest in the first minute or two and then seems to fade. It hasn’t gone anywhere. Your nose just adjusts, and the concentration drops once air is moving.
Techs call the coil version of this “dirty sock syndrome,” and the name is accurate. I’ve opened air handlers in Danville and San Ramon where the coil face looked fine from a flashlight angle but smelled exactly like a hockey bag.
The Four Usual Suspects
Microbial growth on the evaporator coil. The classic. Bacteria colonize the wet coil fins and the smell rides the airflow. Common in systems that switch between cooling and off repeatedly, which is most of the East Bay in summer, cool mornings, hot afternoons.
A clogged condensate drain line. All that moisture the coil pulls out has to drain somewhere. The drain line grows algae, the algae clogs the line, and now you’ve got standing water sitting in the pan going stale. That’s a swampy smell rather than a sock smell, and it comes with a bonus risk: the pan overflows and water shows up on the floor or ceiling below. A wet, dirty filter. If the filter is overdue and has gotten damp, either from humidity or from sitting close to the coil, it can be the whole source. This is the two-minute, five-dollar fix, so rule it out first.
Mini splits: the blower wheel and cover. Ductless units have their own version of this. The long barrel fan (the blower wheel) sits right behind the coil, stays damp, and collects a felt-like coating of dust that turns into a mold farm. The inside of the plastic cover grows spots too. If your wall unit puffs out a musty smell at startup, this is almost always it. Filters on mini splits are washable and easy, but the wheel is buried behind the coil. What You Can Safely Do Yourself
- Replace the filter. If it’s gray, dense, or damp, that may be your answer. Run the system for a day and see if the smell drops off.
- Flush the condensate drain. Find the drain line near the indoor unit, most have a T-fitting or capped service port. Pour a cup or two of distilled white vinegar in and let it sit. Then check the drain outlet outside, it should drip while the AC runs.
- Look at the drain pan. Flashlight, quick look under the coil if it’s visible. Standing water or slime means the drain isn’t doing its job.
- Mini splits: clean what you can reach. Wash the filters, wipe the louvers and the inside of the front cover with a damp cloth. This helps, but if the blower wheel is coated, the smell comes back.
What Not to Do
Don’t spray chemicals into the evaporator coil. The self-rinsing foam cleaners sold for this are meant for the outdoor coil, where a hose does the rinsing. Sprayed blind into a closed indoor cabinet, they push grime deeper into the fins, drip who-knows-what into the pan, and can clog the drain or damage the coil coating. I’ve been called out to fix more than one DIY coil cleaning.
Skip the ozone generators. At levels that kill mold, ozone is harmful to breathe, and California restricts ozone-generating air cleaners for exactly that reason. At “safe” levels it masks the smell while the colony keeps growing. Same for scented vent clips and sprays. Remove the growth or live with the smell, there’s no third option.
When to Call
- The smell comes back within days of a fresh filter and a drain flush. The growth is established on the coil or blower wheel and needs to be physically removed.
- Water under or around the indoor unit. The drain is clogged past what vinegar fixes, and water damage costs more than the service call.
- The musty smell is there with the system off. Then it’s probably not the AC at all. Check for a crawlspace issue, a slow plumbing leak, or damp carpet before blaming the equipment.
- Electrical or burning smell. Different problem entirely. That’s not mold, that’s overheating wiring or a failing motor. Shut the system off at the thermostat and call, don’t run it to “see if it clears.”
One more thing worth knowing: a coil dirty enough to smell is often dirty enough to restrict airflow, and restricted airflow is the number one cause of frozen evaporator coils. If your musty-smelling system also struggles to keep up on hot afternoons, those are probably the same problem wearing two hats.
