A thermostat with no power feels like the whole system died, but it almost never is. The thermostat itself runs on 24 volts coming off a small transformer at the air handler or furnace. When that 24 volts gets interrupted, the screen goes blank or a smart thermostat throws a no-power-to-Rc message. The heating and cooling equipment downstream is usually fine. Something upstream cut the low-voltage circuit.
