AC Freezing Up in El Cerrito
Freezing happens when the evaporator coil runs colder than the air around it can hold above freezing, so moisture that should drain off the coil turns to frost instead. Once frost builds, it blocks the airflow the coil needs, the coil gets colder still, and cooling output drops toward nothing. It is a self-feeding problem, and it almost always starts with something ordinary: a dirty filter, a low charge, a coil that has not been cleaned.
El Cerrito's cooling load is light most of the year, so central AC never got installed in a lot of the older housing stock here. Common causes
Dirty mini-split filter screen. The mesh screens on a ductless head clog with dust fast in older El Cerrito homes that have never had the screens pulled and rinsed. A choked screen starves the small coil of airflow and it frosts. We pull and clean or replace the screens, clear the blower wheel behind them, and confirm air moves freely before we call it done.
Low refrigerant from a leak. A mini-split short on charge runs its coil colder than it should and ices over.
