Deep coil cleaning on Rheem AC units in Clayton
Problem: Two days earlier we were at this Clayton home for a Nest error and repaired a damaged communication wire (that visit is here). While we were outside, we saw the outdoor coils on the Rheem units. They were caked with dust, lint and dry leaves, and we recommended a deep cleaning.
Diagnostics: With the top and fan off, the problem was plain. A felt-like layer of dust covered the coil fins from top to bottom, and leaves had piled up at the base. Air has to pass through those fins to carry heat out of the house. When they’re blocked, the system runs longer and works harder for the same cooling.
Solution: We came back on October 8. We opened each unit, cleaned the coils from the inside out, rinsed the cabinet base around the compressor and cleared the debris. Then we put the units back together.
Result: The fins are open again, and the photos show the difference better than we can describe it. Units under trees clog faster. Look at the coil through the grille once a year, and if you can’t see the fins, it’s time for a cleaning.
