Ducane in Belmont
Ducane is Lennox's value line, ducted furnaces and AC systems built simpler than premium Lennox and priced under it, with parts that are easier to source than the proprietary components on Lennox's top-tier boards. In Belmont that fits a real slice of the housing stock. The hillside tracts above Ralston Avenue, places like Belmont Heights and Sterling Downs, were built in the 1950s and 60s with single-zone ducted systems tucked into a garage or a below-grade furnace closet built into the slope. Most of those original systems are long past service life, and a straightforward Ducane replacement matched to the existing ducts is often the right call.
Belmont also has newer townhome and condo development along El Camino Real near the Caltrain station, where smaller packaged units and compact ducted systems serve a different load entirely. A hillside house on a west-facing slope carries more late-afternoon heat than a flat-lot home two streets over with the same square footage, so we don't size off a neighbor's system or the old unit's tonnage. We run the load calculation for the specific house.
Where I'd steer someone away from Ducane is a home that's already added zoning or is planning an addition that will need it. That's a control and staging conversation for a different tier. For a single-zone hillside home replacing tired original equipment, Ducane's simpler design and easier parts availability line up with what the house actually needs.
Ducane work we do in Belmont
Furnace closets built into the slope. A lot of the hillside homes here have the furnace closet built partly below grade into the hill, and that spot holds more moisture than a garage on a flat lot. We see control boards and igniters fail earlier on those units, so on a Ducane furnace in one of these closets we check drainage and venting before we just swap the failed part.
Hot-surface igniter and flame sensor failures. The igniter is a thin ceramic strip that cracks with enough heat and cool cycles, and a fouled flame sensor shuts the burner down as a safety lockout even though the furnace is otherwise fine. Both show up as a no-heat call on an older Ducane furnace, and both are common, easily stocked parts.
Condensers sized off the old unit instead of the sun exposure. When a past installer matched a new condenser to whatever tonnage was already there, a west-facing hillside unit can end up sized for a different sun exposure than it actually has. We've corrected more than one Belmont system that short-cycled because the replacement copied the old number instead of a fresh load calculation.
