Furnace Repair in Sunnyvale

Sunnyvale gets known for its heat, but the 1950s and 60s ranches here run gas furnaces that have been quietly limping along for years. That is where most of our heating calls come from.

Furnace Repair in Sunnyvale

Sunnyvale gets talked about for cooling, and fairly so. It is one of the warmer South Bay microclimates and AC duty cycles here are high. But the winters are still cool enough that the furnace matters, and the housing stock tells the rest of the story. Much of this city is 1950s and 60s three-bedroom ranches from the original fruit-orchard tracts, and a lot of those homes are still on aging gas forced-air furnaces that nobody has looked at closely in years.

On those older systems the failures are predictable. Hot surface ignitors crack. Flame sensors carbon up and start short-cycling the burner. Draft inducer motors wear out as the unit ages. We carry parts for all three. The complication in Sunnyvale is the same one we see on the cooling side: a 1960s ranch that grew. Garage conversions and second-story additions are common here, and the original furnace was rarely upsized to match the bigger conditioned space. A furnace that struggles to heat the back rooms is sometimes a repair and sometimes an undersizing problem the original equipment was never going to solve.

On a gas furnace call we test carbon monoxide, check gas valve function, and inspect the heat exchanger before we quote anything. If we find a cracked exchanger on an older unit, that is a safety shutdown and a replacement conversation, and we show you the crack on camera first. On newer Sunnyvale homes the equipment is generally in better shape, so those calls are more often control or sensor issues than full failures.

What we run into in Sunnyvale

Ignitor and flame sensor failures on old ranch furnaces. The most common heating call we get in the 1950s and 60s tracts. A cracked hot surface ignitor means no ignition at all; a carboned flame sensor makes the burner light and then drop out a few seconds later. We diagnose which one it is, clean or replace, and confirm a clean steady flame before we leave.

Furnace that cannot keep up with an addition. A converted garage or second-story addition adds conditioned space the original furnace was never sized for. We check whether the equipment is actually failing or just undersized for the home as it stands now, run the load on the real square footage, and tell you honestly which problem you have before you spend money on either.

Carbon monoxide and heat exchanger safety check. Every gas furnace visit includes CO testing and a heat exchanger inspection. On an aging unit a cracked exchanger is a real safety issue. If we find one we shut the system down, show you the crack on camera, document it, and the next step is yours.

Draft inducer and blower motor wear. As a furnace ages the draft inducer motor is a frequent point of failure, and a tired blower motor will choke airflow to the back of the house. We test both, and when a motor is the only thing wrong on an otherwise sound furnace, replacing it is usually the right call over a full system.

Furnace Repair in Sunnyvale: common questions

Do you cover Sunnyvale or do I get routed to a call center?

We are a San Ramon based company and we run our own trucks across the South Bay, including Sunnyvale and the surrounding cities. You reach us, not a dispatch service. Same-day is best effort, not a guarantee, and we will tell you straight whether we can get to you that day.

Is furnace repair even worth it in a city this warm?

Yes. Sunnyvale summers get the attention, but these older ranches run their furnaces every winter. The real question is usually age. On a furnace past 15 years with a major component failure we run the replacement math, including whether a heat pump conversion picks up current rebates, and put both numbers on the estimate.

My furnace lights and then shuts off after a few seconds. What is that?

That is almost always a dirty flame sensor or a failing ignitor. The burner lights, the control board does not see a stable flame, and it shuts the gas off as a safety response. Cleaning the sensor often fixes it for under the cost of a replacement. We confirm which it is on the diagnostic, and the $75 diagnostic is credited toward any repair over $200.
