Thermostat Not Working in Los Gatos

We work both the Los Gatos hillside customs and the older homes downtown, and a dead thermostat in either one is usually a single part, not a failed system.

Thermostat Not Working in Los Gatos

A thermostat that goes blank or stops responding looks alarming. In Los Gatos it is almost always one fixable part. Larger hillside homes here are often set up with more than one zone, so when one screen goes dark and another still works, the failure is isolated to that zone's power, fuse, or wiring. That is a small repair.

Older homes closer to downtown tell a different story. Some had no forced air to begin with and got cooling added later as a ductless system or a retrofit, and that work was sometimes done by whoever handled the remodel. We see smart thermostats put on those systems without a proper C-wire, which leaves the stat browning out: blank screen, random reboots, a fan that will not stay on. That points to the wiring at the air handler.

Across both kinds of homes, the real culprits are usually plain and cheap. A dead battery. A blown low-voltage fuse on the control board. A connection that backed out over years of heat cycling. We meter the actual voltage at the wires before we condemn anything, because most dead-thermostat calls are not a dead thermostat.

Common causes

Dead batteries on a battery-powered stat. The simplest and most common cause of a blank or frozen display. We replace them and confirm the screen and the call both come back. If the thermostat is hardwired and still dark, batteries are not it and we look upstream.

Smart thermostat with no C-wire. Common on the older downtown systems where a Nest or Ecobee went onto two-wire field wiring. The stat steals power off the heat or cool wire and browns out. We confirm whether a common wire exists, run one or fit a proper adapter, and verify the stat holds steady voltage instead of rebooting.

Blown low-voltage fuse on the control board. A short in the field wiring, sometimes a chafed run at a condenser on a hillside lot, pops the small fuse on the air handler board and kills the thermostat. We find the fuse, find and fix the short that blew it, then replace it. Swapping the fuse without finding the short just repeats the failure.

One hillside zone down, others fine. On a hillside home set up with more than one zone, this is a common call. The working zones prove the equipment and main supply are good, so we isolate the dead zone: its transformer, damper board, fuse, and wiring, and tell you the exact part before any work.

Loose or corroded wiring. Terminals back out over time and retrofit junctions in old walls and crawl spaces corrode. We pull the stat, inspect every terminal at the stat and the board, ohm the run if needed, and re-land clean connections.

Failed thermostat. Sometimes the stat itself is genuinely dead, often after a surge or past the ten-year mark. We confirm it with a meter at the wires, then match a replacement to your equipment so multi-stage or ductless control works right.

How we diagnose it

  • Identify whether the stat is battery or hardwired, and on a home with more than one zone which zone is dead versus working.
  • Meter the 24-volt supply at the thermostat to split a stat fault from an upstream power fault.
  • Check the control board's low-voltage fuse for the affected zone and look for the short that blew it.
  • On smart thermostats, verify a real C-wire and steady charging voltage, a common failure on retrofit installs.
  • Inspect and ohm the field wiring for loose terminals and corroded retrofit junctions before condemning a part.

Thermostat Not Working in Los Gatos: common questions

Do you actually come up to the Los Gatos hillsides, or just downtown?

Both. We route through Los Gatos and the South Bay regularly from our San Ramon base and reach the hillside customs as readily as the downtown blocks. Call (925) 999-4095 and we will give you an honest arrival window; same-day is our aim but best effort, not guaranteed.

Someone added a ductless system to my older house. Why does the new smart thermostat keep going blank?

Most likely it was installed without a proper common wire and is browning out when it tries to power itself off the heat or cool wire. On retrofit systems this is the single most common smart-thermostat failure, and the fix is at the wiring, not a fancier thermostat.

One zone's thermostat is dead but the rest of the house is comfortable. Is the system shot?

Almost certainly not. On a home with more than one zone, a working zone proves your equipment and main power are fine, so the fault is isolated to one zone's fuse, transformer, or wiring. That is a targeted repair, and we put the specific part on the written estimate first.
