It could be a blown fuse, a tripped condensate float switch, a transformer that failed during a rough power transition, or a C-wire that was never landed when the house was upgraded to a Nest or an Ecobee. Some properties out here are on well water rather than municipal service, and a well pump sharing a subpanel with the HVAC transformer can trip a shared breaker during a generator start, which reads the same as a dead thermostat.

Common causes

Tripped condensate float switch. Most modern air handlers wire a float switch in series with the thermostat's 24-volt circuit, so a backed-up condensate line kills the thermostat on purpose to stop water damage. We clear the line, flush the trap, and verify the float drops and power comes back before we call it fixed.

Transformer or board fault from a rough power transition. A generator or battery transfer that is not clean can send a voltage spike or a brownout through the control transformer during a PG&E shutoff, and a transformer already near the end of its life can fail right at that moment. We meter the primary and secondary under load and replace the transformer if it cannot hold steady 24 volts.

Blown low-voltage fuse on the control board. A small blade fuse protects the 24-volt circuit. A pinched or shorted wire pops it and the thermostat dies. The fuse is a dollar part. Locating the short is what actually matters, because skipping that step means a new fuse blows again as soon as the call energizes.

Missing or disconnected C-wire on a smart thermostat. Many of these homes have upgraded to Nest or Ecobee thermostats that need a constant common wire to stay powered. Older wiring frequently skipped running a C wire, which leaves the stat power-cycling or dark, often with a no-power-to-Rc message. We run a genuine C wire from the air handler or install a proper add-a-wire adapter, instead of leaving a battery workaround that will fail again next season.

Shared subpanel breaker tripped by a well pump on generator power. On properties with a well rather than municipal water, the HVAC transformer sometimes shares a subpanel with the well pump, and the pump's start-up draw on generator power can trip a breaker that also feeds the thermostat circuit. We check the panel wiring and confirm whether the HVAC circuit needs its own dedicated feed.

  • 24 volts gets metered between R and C at the thermostat and again at the control board to pinpoint where the loop opens.

  • Check the electrical panel for a shared breaker between the HVAC transformer and a well pump or other backup-power load.
