  • Meter for 24 volts between R and C right at the thermostat and again at the furnace board, which tells us where along the circuit the power actually stops.
  • Check whether a smart thermostat has a genuine common wire feeding it, or whether it's been quietly draining its own battery instead.
  • Test the furnace's control transformer on both sides and check the low-voltage fuse on the board.
  • Run the R and C wiring back through the crawlspace, watching for rodent damage or a nick left behind from an old remodel.
  • If a safety switch tripped, confirm why with combustion analysis and CO testing before we reset anything.
