AC Tripping the Breaker in Fremont
A breaker trips when the circuit draws more current than it is rated to handle. On an air conditioner that means a single component is pulling too many amps: a capacitor that can no longer start the motor, a compressor straining or shorting, or wiring grounded to the cabinet. The trip is protection working. Repeatedly resetting it just forces power back into the fault.

Common causes

Dirty condenser coil under eastern-Fremont summer load. In the warmer eastern zones the AC carries real load, and a dust-caked coil cannot reject heat. Head pressure climbs, compressor amps rise, and the breaker trips mid-cycle. We read pressures and amps, then clean the coil, which often clears the trip without a part.
Shorted compressor windings. On an end-of-life system the compressor windings can break down and short to ground, tripping the breaker the instant it starts. We megohm-test the windings. If they are grounded, the compressor is done, and we put repair against a replacement, often a heat pump conversion, on the written estimate.
Variable-speed drive or inverter board fault on newer systems. The variable-speed equipment common in newer Fremont neighborhoods can trip the breaker from an inverter or drive fault rather than a simple component. These need manufacturer-level diagnostics. We pull the drive fault codes and read the amp draw before replacing anything expensive.
Pitted contactor. On systems past eight years the contactor points pit and arc, spiking current and causing intermittent trips. We inspect the points and replace a worn contactor. It is a cheap, common part we keep on the truck.
Seized condenser fan motor. A fan bearing that has dried out and seized stalls the motor, pulling high amps, and the lost airflow spikes head pressure too. Either way the breaker trips. We spin the fan by hand and check motor amps before replacing it.
