AC Not Cooling in Berkeley
Berkeley is the honest exception on this list. The bay keeps summers mild, and many older homes were built without any ducting, so there is no central AC to fail. When a Berkeley customer says the AC will not cool, it is usually one of two things: a ductless mini-split that has stopped putting out cold air, or a hillside home that runs hot on the handful of warm afternoons each year and has a window or small split unit falling behind.
On the mini-split side, the failure modes are real and fixable. A head that blows warm is most often low on refrigerant from a flare-fitting leak, fouled with a dirty filter or coil, or sitting on a tired outdoor unit. Berkeley's cool mornings rarely freeze a properly charged coil, so when we see icing it is almost always low charge or restricted airflow, not weather.
We carry gauges and read the actual refrigerant numbers rather than guessing. Because the cooling season here is short, we are also straight with you about whether a repair is worth it or whether you are better off cleaning the units and moving on. We will not sell you a system you barely run.
Common causes
Mini-split low on refrigerant. Ductless systems leak most often at the flare fittings where the line set connects. The head runs but the air is only mildly cool. We check pressures at the service port, find the leak, reflare or replace the fitting, and recharge to the manufacturer's weight. We put the leak repair and charge on the estimate separately.
Dirty mini-split filters and coil. The thin mesh filters in a ductless head clog faster than people expect, and a fouled indoor coil cuts cooling sharply. This is the cheapest fix on the list and sometimes the only one needed. We clean both and recheck output temperature before quoting anything bigger.
Failed capacitor or fan on the outdoor unit. Even mini-split condensers use capacitors and a fan motor. If the outdoor fan will not spin, the system cannot reject heat and the indoor head blows warm. We test the capacitor and motor and replace the failed part, usually same visit.
Window or portable unit at end of life. Many Berkeley homes cool a bedroom with a window or portable AC. When it stops cooling, the honest answer is sometimes that an aging window unit is cheaper to replace than repair. We will tell you that rather than running up a diagnostic on a disposable appliance.
Communication or control fault on the head. Mini-splits run their compressor speed off the indoor board talking to the outdoor inverter. A communication fault can leave the fan blowing room-temperature air. We read the error code, check the interconnect wiring, and isolate board versus wiring before replacing anything.
How we diagnose it
- Confirm what you actually have: ductless mini-split, window unit, or a rare central system, since the fix is completely different.
- On a mini-split, clean and inspect the filters and indoor coil first, then recheck the air temperature off the head.
- Read refrigerant pressures at the service port and check for flare-fitting leaks.
- Test the outdoor fan motor and capacitor.
- Pull any error codes from the head and check the interconnect wiring for communication faults.
