What we see in Palo Alto homes
Climate. Climate zone 4 with strong marine influence, among the mildest summers in the South Bay (design cooling 86°F). Heating design 37°F. Heavy morning fog in summer.
Housing stock. Eichlers concentrated in Greer, Greenmeadow, and Fairmeadow. Spanish revivals and Mediterranean stock dominates Old Palo Alto and Crescent Park. Newer infill across Midtown and Barron Park. Many homes are heritage stock with original layouts preserved, HVAC must work within existing architecture.
Typical systems. Premium heat pump installations (Daikin Atmosphera, Mitsubishi M-Series), ductless mini-split for Eichlers and additions, Title 24 high-efficiency compliance, electrification-driven heat pump retrofits.
Eichler clusters
Palo Alto has the densest Eichler-home concentration in California, Greer Park, Greenmeadow, Fairmeadow, and Royal Manor all have intact mid-century Eichler tracts. Original radiant-slab heating has mostly failed (copper-in-concrete = unrepairable), and post-and-beam ceilings rule out adding traditional ductwork. Multi-head ductless mini-split is the canonical answer here, one outdoor condenser, indoor heads positioned to preserve the open-ceiling architecture that defines the Eichler aesthetic. We’ve worked through 8+ Eichler retrofits since 2023; the playbook is well-established.
Electrification + Palo Alto Utilities
Palo Alto’s municipal utility (CPAU) has historically been ahead of PG&E on heat pump incentives. The 2026 rebate landscape includes CPAU’s heat pump water heater + heat pump HVAC stack, often combinable with manufacturer instant rebates. We verify CPAU eligibility on every Palo Alto estimate. Most replacement projects qualify for some level of rebate, and the application paperwork lands cleaner than the PG&E equivalent. See our California HVAC rebates 2026 guide for the active stack across all Bay Area utilities.
