Equipment
- New programmable smart thermostat
- Heat-pump-aware staging configured
- Control wiring verified
- Both heat and cool modes tested
What the customer reported
The HVAC system in this Mountain View home wasn’t responding properly, heating and cooling kicking on at random, sometimes not coming on at all when called. The thermostat screen would occasionally go blank. Room temperature didn’t match the thermostat display. From the homeowner’s perspective, the whole HVAC system was misbehaving.
What we found
The HVAC equipment itself was fine. We confirmed that by checking the unit directly, when we bypassed the thermostat with a jumper, the system started cleanly and ran a full heat or cool cycle without issue. The fault was at the control side, not the equipment side.
The thermostat had an internal sensor failure plus an intermittent power issue on its 24V control feed. Both of those produce exactly the symptom pattern the homeowner was seeing, random calls for heat/cool, blank screen episodes, wrong temperature readings. The thermostat was past the point of repair.
What we did
- Removed the failing thermostat and verified the control wiring at the wall plate
- Installed a new programmable smart thermostat with proper terminal mapping
- Configured the staging logic appropriate to the home’s HVAC equipment (heat-pump vs furnace-and-AC have different control needs, the smart thermostat needs to be set up correctly or it just defaults to behavior that doesn’t match the system)
- Tested both heat and cool modes end-to-end with full cycles
- Verified room temperature reading matched actual room temperature on a calibrated reference
The detail that mattered
When HVAC equipment seems to be “broken” it’s worth checking the thermostat first. A bad thermostat causes every symptom of a bad HVAC system, at a tenth of the repair cost. We bypass-tested before doing any equipment work. If we’d skipped that step and assumed the equipment was the problem, the homeowner would have been quoted a much bigger repair for a wrong-direction diagnosis.
What the homeowner got
HVAC system running correctly because the thermostat is now actually controlling it correctly. New smart thermostat with programmable scheduling, accurate temperature reading, and reliable communication with the HVAC equipment. Repair covered under our 1-year warranty.
