AC shut off and water poured out in Walnut Creek
Problem: They’d been running the AC for a few hours when it shut off. Then, as they put it, water started pouring out like a waterfall. They called us to have the leaking unit looked at and serviced.
Diagnostics: The indoor unit sits in the ceiling, right above a hinged access panel that holds the air filter. Swing that panel down and you’re looking straight up at the blower and its wiring. The inside of the panel was stained yellow-brown, the way a surface looks after water has run across it.
While an AC cools, it pulls water out of the air. That water drips into a pan under the coil and leaves through a drain line. If it can’t get out that way, it finds another way down.
Solution: We cleaned out the condensate drain.
Result: The drain is clean. If your AC shuts off and you find water near the indoor unit, turn the system off at the thermostat and catch the drip with a bucket or towels. Don’t keep restarting it. Every cooling cycle makes more water, and it has to go somewhere.
